Brrrrr! Is It Over Yet?

winter WINTER! It’s cold. It’s disruptive. It’s expensive. Getting anywhere these days…between the brutal wind, the ice, and the seemingly unending snow…is hard and slow. This winter is challenging even those of us who love snow and colder temps. Today, the temperature is expected to get to 9 degrees. I realize it could be worse, but I’m thinking that’s bad enough. #:0) So am I just whining? Nope. Well maybe a little. But it might surprise you to hear that…I’m actually loving it.

Yeah, I did fall off the road yesterday in my car and it took 2 hours to get pulled out. Our driveway is nearly impassable half the time. And our dogs would much rather pee in the house than go out there and freeze their noogies off.

But none of that really matters. During times like this, I have a built in excuse not to leave the house. My little cabin in the woods is cozy. It’s warm. I can build a fire and cuddle with the dogs. Read a great book or watch TV. Everything and everyone I love is here…or an easy phone or text away. Soup tastes better in this weather, coffee is hotter, and I have unending hours to sit before my computer and create.

Life is flippin’ beautiful!

Happy Reading Everybody!

The Consummate Alpha – Meet Cliff Blood – A Bloodhound Shifter

Book 4: Blood-Hound Paranormal Series

Intergalactic intrigue, sizzling sexual tension, and a giant snake shifter to be vanquished. Things are never dull.

Enjoying much-deserved R&R on the black sand beaches of the ruling Authority’s planet Enitrus, Cliff Blood is not happy when his brother Matt and his lover Rum show up to spoil his vacay with bad news. It seems Brand Lotus, evil snake-villain with a plan to take over Earth by force, has been discovered heading back to Earth and he’s targeting the Bloods’ favorite cops.

Problem is, the Blood boys aren’t going to make it back to Earth before Lotus gets there, so Littlejohn and Petra have to fend for themselves, while negotiating a new development in their relationship that already has them slightly off-balance.

~~*~~

Cliff’s hand was sweaty on the joystick.

“Steady, Blood. We’re almost there.”

They rode the airspace between two of Lotus’s drones, hidden by the sleek airships but in constant danger of being sideswiped by one of them. They’d managed to maneuver their way through the debris field to slide into line with the fighting airships heading back to Snake Eyes, but using the drones as cover was nerve-racking. At any moment the fighters’ super-sensitive detection fields could breach the fairly primitive shields the Vibrance’s shuttles carried and detect them.

Cliff glanced at Falen. “I don’t like bringing you in here. I feel like I’m delivering the lamb right to the lion’s den.”

Falen snorted. “If you think I’m a lamb I’ve been doing something wrong in the bedroom.”

“You know what I mean, Marshal. Lotus wants you bad. If he can capture you, he can bring the Intergalactic Police to its knees.”

Falen frowned. “I thought we agreed not to talk about that.”

Cliff fell silent and focused on swinging clear as the two drones they were hiding between swung into single file to approach the loading dock doors. He dropped back and positioned the shuttle close to the left rear tail-form of the second drone. “I never agreed. You agreed for me.”

Falen expelled a breath. “Look, Blood, when I joined the IP I knew it would be dangerous…”

“I’m happy for you, Marshal! What about me? I didn’t agree to you being in constant danger.”

Falen frowned. “You’re a bounty hunter, Blood. Before that you were a cop. What you do is dangerous too. But I wouldn’t even consider asking you to give it up, because it’s what you are. It’s as much a part of you as that delectable backside of yours.”

Cliff shook his head, realizing Falen was right and, worse, his not-so-subtle reminder of their phenomenal sex life took Cliff’s fickle brain off course and sent it careening down a path he couldn’t afford to be on at that moment.

Falen went on. “Nobody anticipated this, Blood. Lotus’s power play took the IP off-guard. The powers never believed he’d be able to corrupt our officers but he did. The organization is starting to rebound…”

“Thanks to you.”

“– but if Lotus gets a stronghold on Earth it will slow that process considerably.”

They were fifth in line to enter Snake Eyes’ loading dock. Close enough that Cliff could see the tiny forms of black-clad soldiers milling around inside. “What’s the deal with him going after Littlejohn and Petra?”

Falen slid Cliff a look. “I’m not sure, but it’s possible he wants to use them as leverage against me… force me to give him what I know.”

Cliff felt the blood draining from his face. “Will it work?”

“No.” Falen expelled a breath, clearly upset by his response. “It can’t. There’s way more at stake here than the lives of two cops on Earth. Though it kills me to say it.”

Cliff thought about this for a moment, reaching over to adjust their speed as they approached the big airship. “Then we’ll need to make sure he doesn’t get his hands on them.”

“I’m afraid that will be up to them, Blood. We aren’t going to get there in time to help them.” Falen slipped his harness off and stood, moving behind the seat to grab their weapons. He dropped an O2 gun into the holster he had strapped across his chest and one that shot real bullets into the small of his back. He stuck a long knife through his belt and moved to stand behind Cliff, placing his hands on his lover’s tense shoulders. “This is gonna get ugly fast, Blood. They’ll know we’re here as soon as we clear the doors. What do you have in mind?”

Cliff’s hands moved over the dials and switches on the console, prepping them for a quick landing. “We’re gonna crash and burn, literally, so you’d better strap yourself in, Marshal.”

Falen didn’t respond, but a heartbeat later Cliff felt the soft heat of the big marshal’s lips against the back of his neck. “I love you, Blood.”

Cliff closed his eyes briefly under the husky caress of that endearment. Embracing the warmth Falen’s words created in his gut, Cliff nodded. “I love you too, fire-boy. Now get that sexy ass strapped into a seat. I’m about to return you to your natural element.”

Falen did as instructed. “Phenomenal.”

“I thought you’d like that. But just so you know, if Lotus’s guys do get hold of you, I can’t promise I won’t go all squiggy on their asses.”

Falen’s lips twitched on a suppressed smile. “Noted and appreciated.”

Bounty Hunter Matthew Blood always gets his man. Even when that man’s a fairy.

Bounty Hunter Matthew Blood is a bloodhound shifter. Tracking things comes very naturally to him. Hunting a skip who’s out on bail for trafficking in drugs, he watches the skip get blasted out of a fourth floor window. When Matt goes after the only other person in the vicinity, he gets taken down in a flash of light. Later, he learns that the fairy who blasted him hadn’t so much murdered his skip as accidently dropped him out of a window trying to escape the man’s attempts to strip him of his fairy dust.

Turns out there’s a fairy dust ring afoot and Matt may be the only one who can help the sexy fairy close it down. Working with a unique posse, including someone from Matt’s home planet, Eninac, the two men go after the ring, discovering a fiery mutual attraction in the process.

4.5 Nymphs from Literary Nymphs Reviews: “Declan Sands has created an exciting, as well as very enjoyable romantic suspense. I am looking forward to the next episode.”

4.5 Stars and a Sizzling rating at SensualReads.com: “Mystery and humor, passion and heat all combine to make Blood Hound 1: Dusted by talented Declan Sands a captivating read that leaves us all panting for more.”

4 stars from Manic Readers: “What do you get when you mix an off planet shifter, a sexy fairy and a dead drug dealer…fairy-smacked! A fun, sexy, well-written novella and I for one can’t wait to see where this series goes next.”

Love Romances and More: “I absolutely adored this book. It was funny, smoldering hot and kept me on the edge of my seat as I flipped the pages, hoping Rum and Matthew would be able to find the missing fairies. Declan Sands is a talented storyteller who packs a lot in this story but also doesn’t overkill with lots of telling instead of showing. The story flows smoothly, the simmering sexual tension between Matthew and Rum is quite hot and some of the phrases, such as fairy smacked, left me giggling at times. This is a fast paced story that will keep you highly entertained.”

Monday Musings – Book Trailers

I’m thinking a lot about this subject right now because I recently started updating and creating new trailers. I’ve been in a creative frenzy and having a ton of fun. I use Nero to create my book trailers because it’s not so complex that there’s a five year learning curve but it has a lot of fun effects and offerings. The last time I designed trailers for my books was about 4 years ago. At that time I believed trailers would help sell books by making the stories visual and fun. At some point over the last several years I fell away from the notion that trailers did much good in selling a book so I stopped making them and concentrated my time in other areas.

Looking back, I think that was a mistake. The real value of a book trailer is not to immediately sell books, but to create excitement about the story behind the book. There can be a connection between the two. But there doesn’t have to be.

I love movie trailers. A movie trailer hopefully gives me a firm idea about the movie, so I can decide if I want to see it. Sometimes trailers lie, presenting a dark drama as something comedic, or portraying a dramatic piece as a romance. When that happens it’s very irritating. We don’t watch trailers purely for entertainment, though they can be very entertaining, we watch them for information, to determine tone and object of the story line, or to learn if the subject matter is something we’re interested in pursuing.  The result of watching a trailer we like is not necessarily to go immediately and watch the movie or read the book, but the trailer should leave you with a lingering taste that, hopefully, will entice you to pursue more information.

Book trailers are one piece of a writer’s marketing portfolio. They can be powerful, or they can just be meh. But one thing is inescapable, they must be true to the book. Otherwise the author is lying to her readers.

And that’s just not acceptable.

Happy viewing, Everybody!

If you’re interested, here’s the brand new trailer for my Hoale Construction Mysteries. I hope it sticks with you enough to encourage you to pursue more information about the books.  #:0)

~~*~~

Cliff was surprised to hear a knock on his door as he stepped out of the shower. He swore, so tired he could barely keep his eyes open. He gave passing thought to just ignoring the insistent knocking and going to bed. Nobody should be knocking on a guy’s door at three in the morning.

But he couldn’t do it. His experience was that anyone knocking on a door at that hour really needed something.

His stomach twisted in shock when he opened the door to find  Marshal Scott standing there looking yummy and unrumpled, despite the late — or early — hour. “Marshal. Unless you’re here to arrest me, this is going to have to wait until tomorrow.”

Falen stepped forward,  forcing Cliff back. “Then I guess you’re under arrest.”

Cliff sighed, stepping out of the way to allow the tall, auburn-haired god to enter.  Exhausted though he was, Cliff didn’t miss the delectable view as Scott passed by, either coming or going. Marshal Scott might be a consummate jerk, but the man had a first-class ass and a truly stupendous pair of pecs.

Cliff licked his lips, feeling his weariness slide away. Closing the door, he stepped into the marshal’s space in a deliberate attempt to unnerve him. “Can I get you a beer or something?”

Scott’s shoulders stiffened noticeably. There was a pulse of tense silence between them as the other man’s heated gaze slipped down Cliff’s damp chest to the towel he held around his hips. Cliff thought Scott might have made a small sound of pain as he took in Cliff’s “fresh from the shower” condition.

To Cliff’s surprise, Scott shook his head and reached for Cliff, dragging him close. “No beer. But I’ll definitely take the something.”

Falen’s lips captured his, and Cliff’s world tilted dangerously. The marshal’s soft mouth moved insistently on Cliff’s, his tongue pressing for entrance. Cliff  resisted for a fraction of a second, realizing the complications a relationship between them would create, but it had been months since he’d wanted another man, and he wasn’t in the mood to be reasonable. He opened his lips and welcomed Falen’s hot tongue in to dance with his. The other man tasted of liquid courage in the form of a really good Scotch.

Cliff wrapped his arms around Falen, drawing him close as lust twisted in his belly. The long, hard ridge of flesh in Falen’s pants made his own cock stir with interest, and he realized the towel he’d wrapped around his middle was tenting quickly.

Falen groaned softly against  his lips, the hunger in the sound driving right to Cliff’s nipples, peaking them against Falen’s pristine shirt. He tugged the shirt from Falen’s jeans and slipped his hands beneath it, skimming them over a firm, toned geography of delicious man territory.

Falen tugged on Cliff’s towel and, before Cliff’s lust-fogged brain had time to process what was happening, a big, warm hand was holding his dick.
